New 6R80 transmission...

Anyone else think about the possibility of mating on of these to our engine? I love the thought of a 6-spd auto in an SC.

Does the aftermarket offer a stand-alone controller for it yet? That would probably be the biggest hurdle I think.

cheers

Looks like FAST makes something that might work, and I saw a couple others that may work as well. The gear ratios in the 6R80 are as follows:

4.17, 2.34, 1.52, 1.14, 0.87, 0.69

Biggest hurdle I see is figuring out what rear end ratio to run with the thing. A 2.73 would be equivalent to having a 4.10 out back of a 4R70W in gears 1-3. Not bad if you cross the traps under 115mph and can rev to at least 6250 rpm.

Guys like David, Chris, or Kevin running 125mph+ trap speeds could get away with a 3.27 at the cost of shifting into 4th, but 1st-3rd gear would blow the tires off with a 13.63:1 final drive ratio. That's like a 4.80 rear gear!!

Oh well... maybe it's not such a good idea after all.

Gear ratio's are the last worry. Bolting it up to your 3.8L would be by far the biggest challenge.

as power levels go up you don't need as many gears. that is why i want/am going to a powerglide (just 2 forward gears)

I have been thinking about going with a C4.............

With the advances they have with the AOD's and how tough those things are becoming (I've read easily over 800rwhp now) I'd get a built up one and at least have the OD when cruising along. Later vehicles with the 4r70w's are also up there when using a more modern one.

I don't think there is anyone in the club running high enough power with the v6 that can out run a properly built up AOD/4r70w.

It's not about power handling. C4's have no advantage in that department. Where the C4 has an advantage is that it is lighter, cheaper to build, and has less internal frictional loss compared to an AOD type trans.

Good point Kevin. You wouldn't have use for this and I don't know if the rest of the high power guys do enough daily driving for this to be of any benefit.

I agree, but only if the car is mostly street driven and doesn't exceed a 1000 HP. For an SC of average weight that is mainly driven on the track or is making more than a 1000 HP (at the crank), I'd use a built TH400. From everything I've read, the C4 won't last very long in a high powered car that weighs more than 3000 lbs. Even the high powered mustang guys think their cars are too heavy for a C4, and the majority of guys with more than 650 rwhp use either a TH400 or a Glide.

C4 has the Advantages Dave mentioned. Mostly less power robbing. They do fail quite often though. Even the fully built ones...Usually input shaft failure....And they were replaced with Th400's and never touched again....One of my friends even put a bowtie with a Ford emblem in it, on the rear window of his SN-95. Under it said "Dazed and Confused". I didnt care as long as we didnt have to pull the Art Carr C4 out again...

Found the gear ratios for the 6r75. And some comparison numbers of other tran's

6R75............................4.17 2.34 1.52 1.14 0.87 0.69 Thats one hellofa 1st gear.
4R70W................................2.84 1.55 1.00 0.70
AOD....................................2.40 1.47 1.00 0.67
C4......................................2.46 1.46 1.00

That what I was saying in my earlier post. Run the 6R55, 6R75 or 6R80 (same gear ratios) with a 2.73 rear gear and in 1st-3rd gear it's the equivalent of running a 4R70W with a 4.10 out back. That's insane for a street car, especially considering the Mustang is going with a 3.15 rear gear.

6R80 adapter kit for SBF

I just came across this on a 71-3 Mustang site that Performance Automatics company has a kit for mating a 6R80 with a Small block ford, which should mean our 3.8's as well.

thread says summit racing sells a complete kit with trans and controller.

Just looking into this myself as have thought would really like the idea.

Ed - can you bring in a 2.7EC crate motor!! :)

there is a guy....

PA transmission will build you whatever you want and stand behind it for three years.. They cut off the bell and replace it with something that is "SF1" rated as well. Yes they are a bit $$$ but if they work then go for it.. They do have a six speed GM trans that comes with all the controls to hook it right up to your car and go play.. yes they do build one for our engines as well.. $6500 to your door if you want to know with everything including the converter:D.....Rich it takes about three weeks to get it as well....

that is the same guy
