    '96 brakelight/shifter problem

    Hello,
I used to be here a few years back. I then had an '89 SC.

Anyway. My current problem.I now have a '96 LX with 72k+ miles.First I noticed that I couldn't get my shifter from park to drive.I realize you need to apply the brakes first to get out of gear. The only way now is to turn the key aprox. 1/4 of the way between off and run.Pull selector to neutral then start and move to reverse or forward. I also recently discovered I don't have brake lights.I'm wondering if these problems are related? Since no brake lights shifter lock won't disenguage? Or is this a really weird concidance?

Thanks for the help glad to be back!
    Bryan

I would also agree that would be a good place to start.

    Just did this

You are right on the money. My wifes 94 SC just did the same thing, would not go out of Park and I had no brake lights.

Switch is $5.99 at my Autozone here in TN, so it should be close to that where you are.

I think my switch is pretty different from this one. Could anybody take a picture form it installed under the dash?

If it is not OEM, as I guess, is it the same bracket?

The one you have pictured here is like the one I have, and I've seen on all the MN12s in the boneyard.

Doesn't mount to the bracket, it's actually the linkage between the rod to the master cylinder / vacuum booster and the pedal.

The rod fits through this and through the rod from the MC/booster, and this is what the pedal actually pushes!

Check where the pedal and the MC/booster rod meet, and see what is there.

Also, that's not a standard Ford harness setup ...

It'll be a few days - may be better to have someone else post a pic (Ruby's currently sitting awaiting new injectors. I pulled two out in pieces when I went to clean them ... geez, wonder if THAT was why I had a severe 2-cylinder miss! *sarcasm* )

Hmm ... not an exact picture, but this is close: http://www.2carpros.com/forum/automo...tch_ford_1.jpg

This one may make clearer what I mean: http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/dr...0_193410_1.gif

On the second one, "A" would be the brake light switch itself.

I'll see about getting pics in a few days - gotta help the stepson fix his truck (his Escort now sounds like marbles bouncing around in a BIG metal can when he tries to crank it - Methinks his motor is toast.)
