HELP!!!!! Overheating Issue!!!

I'd expect a wiring or sensor issue in the case where two coils fail back/back...

Did you pull codes yet?

crank and cam sensors are new and the wiring is good, i am getting signals to the coilpack but no spark.
Cant pull codes, No test connector wired to the EEC (I check the EEC connector after not finding the test port)

Ohm out the coils and see if they both show same failures...all three circuits, first one only, etc.

Coil Pack 1 (Auto store replacement)

Power to each bank is 0.7 ohm for all

Reading between each bank 1.2 ohm for all

Between coil posts for each bank 10.3k ohm on 1, 10.65k ohm on 2, 10.6k ohm on 3

Coil Pack 2 (OEM Motorcraft out of 96 Cougar LS)

Power to each bank is 0.7 ohm for all

Reading between each bank 1.2 ohm for all

Between coil posts for each bank 13.54k ohm on 1,2 13.45k ohm on 3

Quoting another thread here:

In the Haynes manual it states these for the DIS coil resistances;

Primary - 8.0 to 9.0 ohms
Secondary - 13.0 to 14.0 K-ohms
Primary winding to case 10 M-ohms.

The primary is measured across the primary terminal and the supply terminal at the connector.
The secondary resistance is measured between the secondary terminals (the one that the spark plug wires connect to) of each coil pack. They are measured between paired cylinders; 1/5, 2/6, and 3/4.

If either was truly 'fried', I'd expect to find at least one open circuit...?

Seen these?

I don't have a shop manual in front of me, but it sounds like the resistances meet the spec. So both of those coil packs appear to be just fine from what I see.

Here's an in-depth guide, if you haven't seen it before.

http://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford/3.0L-3.8L/how-to-test-the-coil-pack-1

Primary to ground for all 4 pins is 5.4-5.8M ohm for pack 1, over 20M for pack 2

i have a printout of the http://mnharms.com/tutorials/disnostart/ and that is what tells me the coil packs are bad, plus manual charging of the coil to fire isnt producing any spark either. I know the packs are fried, So its back to the question am I just have bad luck with coil packs or could something else be frying my packs?

I'd expect something is messing with them.

If the harness is good and the grounds are good, that leaves excess volts which you haven't checked yet. Get your hands on another coil and only run the car long enough to check...

Maybe I am just slow today. Which part of the MNHarms test guide did the packs fail?

Replaced coilpack again, tried to fire then no spark. Retested, now crank sensor isnt working. Going to replace it tomorrow as well as the ignition module
and adding more ground straps just to be safe. Would one of the front shock/strut mounting bolts be a good location to ground to on these cars??

What size wire are you attempting to use?

Is the ground cable from the pass. side motor mount over to the body present/new?

I don't think that would be too great based on the paint present. You could ground anywhere on the engine.

Are you sure the negative battery cable is clean and secure at both ends?

Also, I am wondering if you have tested the failed coil packs on another car. I wouldn't be surprised if they ran it. Just a hunch.

Its alive!!!!!!

replaced the crank sensor and ignition module and it fires up with no issues. module tested bad and the crank sensor had a small knick probly from when the balancer broke. first coil pack is fried, second not too sure junkyard took it back, but i got a fairly new working coil pack from them ( looked like someone replaced it just before junking the car:D (97 Taurus)) Thanks for all ya'lls help, now as long as it dont give me anymore issues lol;)
