The frame that the fender bolts to is starting to rot out. Any one else have this problem. How much trouble to cut it out and weld a new one in, car has close to 300,000 on it

Engine bays

I found these floating around the forums here:

If the rust is that bad, you might be better off finding either another complete car (or at least an entire front clip), and using that one for parts, I think.

thanks

Thanks Kmt. Its a small spot right behind the strut tower. Is the strut tower just spot welded to that it so hard to see. I love the car, I had an 89 escort my mom wrecked and me and my dad welded a new front clip on that, really don't want to do that again. Thanks

Looks like the strut tower is two separate pieces that are bonded and spot welded to complete the inner fender. If that's all, it would certainly be easier than a clip, but I suspect the closer you look, the more rust you'll find.

Thanks ;) the melted master cylinder dumped dot3, not exactly paint friendly. The real kicker was the melted battery dumping acid. I didn't know if I was going to have to cut out the battery box, but it cleaned up alright. Hind sight, this info would've made my post seem more relevant.

Wow ! That's really bad, like junk the car bad. What caused the fire ?

David

:) You are correct sir!! I don't know what the cause really was, I bought it from an insurance auction in St. Paul. It definitely burned hotter on the passenger side and had some kind of aftermarket cold air and one of those silly ~~~ "Tornado" fuel economy devices in it. No signs of any go fast parts, I literally had ALL of the wiring out and it all appeared stock and unmolested... well, behind the firewall. I couldn't decipher much under the hood, but the dash, carpet and glass were all fine except the drivers window being broken out. I can only assume it was sitting locked when somebody noticed smoke, maybe the FD broke the window to pop the hood and put it out. I have an '89 SC with less then 15k and a 5spd,(but HAMMERED at both ends) so i bought it as a roller to build my SC.

So Mancia- sorry to threadjack- I have shock tower parts if ya need em. That 89 chassis isn't bent that far back
