What are the differences? which is / was standard when? Lots of references to both in forums, mostly a question of curiosity.

Long block vs short block means how much is assembled on the engine like a shortblock is just the block, no heads cam etc... a long block is when it has heads, timing componets (I think) valve covers cam etc.

People misuse the terms quite a bit. A short block includes only the block, crank, rods, and pistons. A long block includes all that plus oil pickup, camshaft, lifters, timing chain, pushrods, heads, and rocker arms. A turnkey engine includes the timing cover, oil pump, harmonic balancer, intake manifold, valve covers, and oil pan. Most people confuse a long block and a turn key engine.

Bottom line is be specific with what you expect and what you are getting. The lines are quite blurry depending on who you are talking too.
