17" Front Runner Tires-Which size?

Trying to get some rubber on a set of 17 x 4.5 wheels for my project car. Since these are 17's, there aren't a lot of choices available. It looks like I can get the following sizes:

  • 26 x 4 x 17 (M/T)
  • 26 x 4.5 x 17 (M&H)
  • 26.2 x 5 x 17 (Moroso)
  • 27 x 4.5 x 17 (Phoenix)
  • 27.5 x 4 x 17 (M/T)
  • 27.5 x 4.5 x 17 (Hoosier)
  • 28 x 4.5 x 17 (M&H)

Since this is a 4.5" wheel, I'm concerned that the 4" tires will be stretched, and I'm not quite sure how a taller tire (>26") will look in the front wheel wells (for the 4.5" tire options).

Since these are $200ea, I'd like to perform this activity only once. Looking for feedback or advice for those who have already traveled down this path.

FWIW, I run the 4.5x27-15 front runners from M&H.

I'm looking more for replies specifically with the 17" option, however, do you have a picture that shows how it fills the wheel well from the side? This may help me judge how tall is too tall. Also in my case, the front will be lowered approx. 2".

26" MH on 17" Wheel

The 26" are gonna look better on a bird IMO. The 27" would prolly look good too. The 28" will net you the best times.

Any opinions on the available widths? I have concerns about putting a 4" on a 4.5" wheel. Perhaps its no big deal? Just for kicks...what are the specs on those front wheels (particularly width and bs)

Looks like Jegs has a sale on the Phoenix front runners (27 x 4.5 x 17) for $136ea. Seeing as the stock 225/60/16 tire is approx. 26.6" tall, I'm sure the 27" will look right at home, as illustrated
.
Pictures are great! Thanks guys!

I think they are 17x4. I can't find any info on them on CCW's site. Looks like Weld bought them.

You should be fine with the 27.5x4 tire from MT judging by the specs on their page. And I would assume the 26" ones would have close to the same specs but they aren't listed.

You get more weight capacity with the taller tires too.

In my opinion the 26 just looks too small. That wheel well has a large radius. I'd shoot for 27.

Considering the stock size tire (just for fitment comparison) is 26.6", I too think that the 27" would look best.

I've narrowed it down to the following:

  • 27 x 4.5 x 17 (Phoenix) listed weight
  • 27.5 x 4 x 17 (M/T)
  • 27.5 x 4.5 x 17 (Hoosier)

One thing to note is that the Phoenix tires are on sale for $131ea at Summit, which is a very fair price. Now it just comes down to either a 4" or a 4.5" tire for these 17x4.5 wheel. Hmm...

I think I would go with the phoenix. Due to price and the specs on the MT 27.5 is closer to 28" than 27". I didn't look at the hoosier specs or the phoenix specs either.

Pulled the trigger on a set from Phoenix this morning. Thanks for the feedback guys. 9.90 or bust!!:D
