Can I upgrade to sport brakes?

Hi Guys,

I picked up a 90 SC. I would like to know if I can run the sport brake package that my 97 LX Sport had? I think it should all just bolt on, rotors, calipers and pads.

Thank you

The answer is no, the early spindles (89-92) are a different casting. The way the caliper mounts is also different. There is a cast in arm on the early style that sticks out over the rotor (and limits the diameter of it). The caliper actually slides on this arm. You'll need to change out the spindles to the 93-97 style.

To amplify nickleman60's answer - if you swap to 93+ spindles, you can also swap to 2003/2004 Mustang GT 2-piston PBRs and get even better braking.

However.

You will also need to figure out what to do about the ABS sensors.

You'll also have to use 93-97 sway bar end links up front.

(Use 2003/2004 PBR calipers because they use the same banjo bolt; 1999-2002 calipers also work, but use a different banjo bolt.)

There's a few other items that need to be done ... https://www.tccoa.com/threads/mustang-pbr-calipers-to-thunderbird-conversion-and-problems.57171/ starts off with a most excellent writeup.

Thanks for the replies. Im considering the Cobra brakes, but rear hubs for them are expensive.

There's an aftermarket provider who's aiming for $100/hub; but you can upgrade to the Mustang GT brakes up front, stock brakes rear, and use your current bolt pattern.

Found the Facebook posting! https://www.facebook.com/FullTiltBoogieRacing/ Search for "Cobra" there and you'll find their posting for the rear hubs.

Fronts are fairly cheap, thankfully; Mustang GT front brake rotors will also work on our cars, from my memory, when using the Mustang hubs, so no redrilling required.

The fronts i researched, they are cheap, typical hub price. I may have found rears for about $180 a pair.
