Reflections upon a BBS.....by Micah Miller.

What is to cause for the chaos on the BBS lately?

And now...."Deep Thoughts" .....by Micah Miller.

Just a few comments behind each selection:

Can one person really bring down a BBS? If so...how could they do it? I would probably spam it, posting as frequently as I could with only the most offensive stuff. This would drown any worthy posts and keep others from posting. But with EZ Board you'de have to wait at least a minute between each post. Plus it would take a lot of energy and concentration to do this. And I'm fairly sure this could never happen here since I would delete such straight forward offensive spaming.

Can a large group of people bring down a BBS? Well...I'm sure they could. They definitely have the size and strength to do so. It would just be very hard to coordinate efforts. Unless you have a single motivating force to organize the efforts for you? Like someone threatening the common good...bringing out the worst in all of us. Heck...a large group of people could easily bring down a BBS without even meaning to do so.

Is there anything a Moderator could do to keep a BBS alive or destroy it?

how about "all of the above option"

although i think the moderator would be the lesser to blame. i dont want to get into censorship around here!

Re: Reflections upon a BBS.....by Micah Miller.

Where's the "ALL OF THE ABOVE" box?

Re: how about "all of the above option"

All of the above could also be a very good option. But it does not allow the blame to fall on any one group then. At this time, we need someone to be held responsible. If anyone believes its a group effort then they can post so.

OFFICIAL: I AM NOW RUNNING FOR...

...Official SCCOA BBS Ruin-er. In fact, I nominate myself for every potential category.

I have long been a proponent of letting Jim post, dammitt. I think the real problem is that people keep replying to him.

And by way of Moderatorly duties, have all the Bobsaget5 posts been deleted yet??

I'm guilty...

Guilty as charged, dammitt. I can't help it. He just pisses me off.

I'll accept a little censorship...

for the good of the board. Without any censorship (you can call it minimum standards of decorum) there's nothing to prevent chaos, and we're getting it here periodically - and it ain't pretty.

It's like many organizations have a "sergeant at arms" at their meetings just to make sure the drunks and the lunatics don't ruin the meeting.

Most of us want to come here to talk about cars and have fun. If the atmosphere becomes too hostile or ugly the board will quickly lose good people.

So I think agreeing to accept a minimum amount of censorship is a small price to pay for order and the good of the group. It's like having cops carry guns: sure they have that power, but they only use their guns in extreme circumstances, at least in my experience. And I behave myself pretty much, so I don't worry about being shot (unless Kurt's nearby).

Re: I'll accept a little censorship...

John...you recall my last email so you know what I'm up to.

BUT...with the Cops carrying guns thing...they also sometimes shoot little kids with toys. Yet again...something that in theory sounds great until an innocent bystander gets shot. Luckily I have hindsight so no one here will die by accident (and Russ...a go kart plowing into you will not be an accident....muuaaahhhhh ha ha ha).

Re: I'll accept a little censorship...

we do need censorship. would you let your 5 year old watch porn all day? play with toxic chemicals? teach him to pick off deer at 500 yards? I think not.

America has the best system. Democracy. there should be a tabulation of "delete post", "lock post" and "keep open" after viewing the post you can vote. For it to be deleted, it takes 75%, for a lock it takes 50% of all votes. For either to take effect at least 50% of the people on the board must have voted.

Sorry canadians, but I'm not going to promote socalism.

Re: I'll accept a little censorship...

Micah bro, I didn't mean that we should arm you and let you kill ill mannered posters...but let me give that some more thought. What I meant was that even powerful weapons/tools in the hands of authority, if wisely used, can be generally good for society. In our case, if some whacko child posts something and gets censored because the moderator he was an adult, too bad. Though I don't think any innocent bystanders would be affected by censorship ricochet or misdirected deletions.;)

Keep up the good work as moderator! I'm sure it isn't easy trying to keep us all moderate.

All for Guns..

I kind of like the equal power theory. We(dues paying members) should all have guns (moderator rights) then crime (harmful posts) would be eliminated. I think this is also called the total anhiliation (sp) theory.

Re: All for Guns..

It's an endlesss circus. We antagonize and it gets worse. It's not just him.......it's every person that contributes their two cents to his posts.
