ZR intake worth 46 horsepower!!!

"ZR Intake is worth 46 horsepower".... or "raised top, I don't need no stinkin' raised top" (well, I do, but I guess I don't need it THAT much).

Thanks to dave's slicks (they were slicks when I took them, right?), I had some nice 60' times (best of 1.876).

Now for the theories: I was running 14.530 best before, now 13.467. That's 1.063 seconds faster. The old addage of 1 horsepower=0.1 seconds in the quarter=100 pounds says that I'm up a wopping 106 horsepower from before!! (sounds good, huh?)

So, the S-model is said to be worth 25-30hp,
70mm TB worth 10-15hp,
75mm MAF worth 10-15hp,
so that totals to a MAXIMUM of 60hp.

That leaves the ZR intake upping the power by 46 horses!

OK OK OK -- I'll let Ken tell everyone about the ride home :)

(who 'da man AGAIN? -- not bad for a stock top and bottom end with 110000 miles on it!)

Re: ZR intake worth 46 horsepower!!!

I think Jeff is blowing away the theory on headers and raised tops by now. As far as the ride , it would not be a normal ride to and from a Mid Altantic meet if something did not happen....no my car did not catch on fire. I lost my alternator in New Jersey. I was able to drive from northern New Jersey to King of Prussia, PA with a shot alternator. This was a true test on Motorcraft battery. All I could see(what I could see) was my lights dimming. I had my son in the back asking all sorts of questions and talking about the racing at E-Town. I was wondering could I make it to King of Prussia. It was looking kinda grim. As I was getting off the ramp to KOP my antilock light went on, I knew this was the start of trouble. I made thru the tolls and went to the first exit ramp. Jeff lost me at that point. By then I called my mother-in-law to tell her where I am was. Next I received a call from Jeff asking me where I was....he was past me on 202 heading home. He truned around and headed back to help me (THANKS JEFF). We jumped the car and got it started to make it off the exit ramp to an office building. Meanwhile, my mother-in-law arrived. I took off to get off the ramp. Jeff tooked off too. I think Jeff left behind about 1/4 of tread from your tires. I took my mother-in-law awhile to move from all the tire smoke!!!!!!! I decided, Hey I can make it to my in-laws. I started to move again and a POS BMW decided he went the wrong way and want to make a U-Turn at drive at the office building. I am sitting there waiting for the light to change. When it finally changed, my car shut down again. We jumped the car again, I took off down the road and the car started acting up again. this time I shut my light off and pulled in to a hotel parking lot and called it a night. I transferred my son and all my stuf in to her car and went home. There is a lesson to be learned here for all Mid-Atlantic members...make sure Jeff is with you when your are going to and from a meet. I guess both Dave and I owe you something, but I at least it is not a Buell(sp?) t-shirt!!!!
Well a better get ready and go replace the alternator.....Thank God for spare SC parts!!!!!!!

Wait.. I don't think I met Jeff at the track.. sorry :(
To busy watching Mustangs .. disintegrate down the track:)

Here's my theory....

I figure that the S-model, the MAF, the TB and the ZR are worth about 50-60hp when done at the same time. Which means that you received an extra 50 or so horsepower from somewhere. But where could it
have come from?? HUMMMM...Wait, I know!!! Those Drag T/A's normally make there home underneath the rear of a moonlight blue SC. Since the blue SC's are naturally faster and sweeter looking, some of that awesomeness must have rubbed off on the tires, and thus they managed to make a slow black car faster!!! :)

All kidding aside, you are once again the man in the Mid-Atlantic chapter. I still believe you would have run 14.0-14.2 had you used the slicks before you made the new mods. That taken into consideration, and the fact that this was E-town and not Numedia or ATCO, and an extra 50-60hp increase seems just about right. But imagine it...a 100K plus XR7, with no blower top, headers, head or cam work, runs a 13.4!!!! I think we have severly underestimated the capability of the MN12 exhaust!!!! Kudo's Mr. Thompson.

No T-shirts where harmed in the rescue attempt....

Well, I didn't ruin any t-shirt, in fact I didn't even get dirty in the rescue attempt this time. The only parts left out of the story was me trying to find ken!

After pulling out of the toll booth (mental note: ALWAYS have exact change), I tore off looking for ken. He was nowhere to be found. Luckily, I used to work in that area, so I had a fair idea of where the roads were. After doing 0-120-0 a couple of times looking up each off ramp, I tore off on 202 north and stopped to call ken on the cell (you have to thank my casio databank watch for remembering the number!).

So, don't feel like I was going home and turned around -- I never left your side!

As for Rich's exhaust -- I think it is (was?) the ticket. Having a cat-less exhaust is the way to roll. The "S" is truly a nice piece too, especially for the older motors.

I believe also that dave has underestimated the capability of BLACK CARS!! :)

Nice meeting all you Southerners......

All us up North folk appreciate it that you like our part of the country. (OK so it's east for you guys).
Ken - Glad to hear you and son were rescued by the Knight in Black Armor!! You son is a pisser! Now - where you gonna put the amp gauge? You only had room for three down there.
Jeff - Sorry didn't get to meet you. Saw you run and watched Ken jump when you did.
Nice meeting all who showed.

That's a helluva run, Jeff!

Congratulations for tieing #5! This kind of news needs to be in the main section. Don't hide an accomplishment like this back here.

Re: ZR intake worth 46 horsepower!!!

Eh, good news travels fast enough! The slip is on the top 25 (top 5?!) now.

Mark, sorry -- didn't even know you were there! Would've liked to meet another SC'er.

I agree, Ken needs an ammeter more than Ward needs a fire extinguisher!! :)

Ok,

I'm never going to live that one down, am I??? Problem is, there aren't any guages I could install to warn me of impending doom!!!

Hmmmmmm,.....

Maybe a First Alert Smoke Detector -- one in every bedroom, one on each floor, and one under the back bumper of your car. HAHAHAAAAHA Oh boy.

Re: ZR intake worth 46 horsepower!!!

My factory gauge worked fine unfortunately. When I saw that light go on I said OH SH*T! What I need is that S Model and TB. I have the exhaust, headers, heads, and cam. Oh ya the raised top.

I would like to thank all who were concerned about

Maybe it was an omen that my alternator went, because last night my blower went also. Let see...I think parts might start breaking in alphabetical order; A for alternator, B for blower, C for?????. I was planning on taking the car off the road on Monday, but now it looks like a little sooner. Hey if anyone has a "S" model they want to donate, I will take it off your hands.

Re: ZR intake worth 46 horsepower!!!

"C" for carburetor? I mean, uhhhh. . .

Re: ZR intake worth 46 horsepower!!!

What happened to the supercharger??? I think Ward may want the old one to match my '86 Escort 1.9L with an M90 :)

Well, if you do get an 'S', I think the next to go will be *C*V Joints!!

Hmmmm, maybe *I* want the spare SC to do a twin supercharged escort. Hmmmmm......

Re: ZR intake worth 46 horsepower!!!

I am excepting contributions for the "S" model. I hope the *C*V joints do not go next. They might with next engine work I get done. Let see a little head porting, a crane cam, arp fastners, stock bottom end equals about 500 ft/lbs of torque and ECC detuner.
I have to play surgeon to find what happen to the blower.

Re: ZR intake worth 46 horsepower!!!

I'm not too concerned about the M90'd 1.9 little in Jeff's tomato orange escort. I'm worried about the head gasket that went on my little 1.9. After I get that figured out, I'm going to attempt my new quadruple turbo system on the escort. Should go great with the Carbon fiber camshaft and the titanium cylinder heads that I already have ready to go on it. Now if I can only keep the damn muffler bearing from breaking again, the escort should be set.

ps. Sorry to hear about the SC Kenny. My guess would be that one of the *C*lutches in your transmission will go next. After that, it's going to suck when your *D*IS module goes, because I believe they are still hard to find!!! :)
