    are 5th and reverse on the same syncro?

    the other day my reverse died and i was going to drive it to my fav mechanic and i got on the highway and i hit 4th and reached speed so i went to put it in 5th and it made a funky noise is this cuz its with reverse

    No 1st & reverse are geared the same or close.
    5th is an overdrive gear.

    NO, this is wrong. 5th gear and reverse are on the same syncro drum. The two parts are different, but they are by themselves on a serparate shaft. Gears 1-4 are on the main input and output shafts. 5th and reverse, like i said share the same syncro hub and drum. However they have different blocker rings. Both are fully syncroed, but 5th has a fiber liner, and reverse is a solid brass ring.

    It it very well possible that the noise going into 5th was because the reverse drum and hub are the same. I would have it checked out asap, before you ruin 5th gear parts, as well as other parts.
