Nub< just bought 89 sc 5spd

I'm very proud of my new car.

people keep telling me she's old. but as i'm twenty four i think were equally in our prime. :-)

What should i expect when it comes to maintenance.
Repairs, head gaskets... etc. What needs to be replaced asap on an 89
Do i replace the clutch yet or wait? Do i rebuild an extra tranny now?

Because i have a 2 year old and i want to be sure he is safe at all times.

And i like to drive hard. LOL.
thanks Dalvenjah, aka KAZ from seattle washington

First question.....

Has it ever sat for a long time without being driven....

These car love to be driven....

When they sit for long periods of time, all kinds of gremlins can pop up.....

Can you post some pictures of your new acquisition....

as far as being safe, well these are safe cars. my 3 year old makes race car sounds everytime we get in mine. he's been riding in mine since he was 1. as for the clutch i would leave it alone until it starts slipping or go out.
head gaskets: they are not an if but when. they will go out. they usually start leaking a lil before they do. so you should know when its time is coming.
electrical: switches and relays go bad all the time. this is lil stuff you can collect from the bone yard and have on hand for when needed, power window motors, seat belt motors, light bulbs, sensors, lil stuff like that. as far as i know no one really ever has any real problems with wiring so you should be ok there.
asap replacements: make sure your front end suspension is in good shape and alignment is good. make sure they adjust the rear cambers. most places will try to say they are not adjustable, they lie, they are very much so adjustable. dont pay them if they wont adjust them. just had mine done 2 weeks ago and they tried that on me. i made it clear i would not pay unless if the (non-adjustable camber) was adjusted. magically it became adjustable. its an internal camber and most all places cant believe something this old has internal cambers.

other then that yes these cars go fast but they also have feelings. you treat them good they will treat you good. rag on them and they will leave you stranded. and its always good to have an extra tranny on hand imo.

One other thing on the 89s.....

Check the wiring harness under the drivers side carpet.....

It runs right next to the door sill / seat belt cover.....

There is a splice where the green / yellow wires go from three wires to four wires.....

This splice gets corroded and will cause all kinds of electrical problems.....

It's pretty easy to get to and check...

Do a search for "splice" and you will see how I corrected the problem in my 89....
