Accumulator Ball

I am in need of an accumulator ball I believe. I was driving and my brake and antilock lights lit up. And the pedal got a little stiff, and every now and then it would turn off, and it turn back on later. I got the car home, and the pump was running continuously, even with the car off. Rather than letting it run, I unplugged the motor so it would've kill the pump or the battery. Would that be the accumulator gone bad?

Change out the ABS relay first....

It is the brown relay located on the firewall near the passenger side hood strut....

How is the brake fluid level....

Fluid level look good, but I didn't take a really close look I suppose. I didn't know previously you should be able to pump the pedal 5-6 times before the pump comes on. It would do it every time or every two times, which after doing some research is why I think its the accumulator. And on a hard brake once both lights came on. If the relay is bad do you think it'd cause the pump to just continuously run till it overheats?

A bad accumulator will cause a hard brake pedal with a flashing brake and ABS light at the same time.....

As old as these systems are, I would go ahead with replacing the accumulator ball.....

Even if it doesn't fix your problem, you will eventually need it.....

Ok, and the ABS relay, is it one you can test by energizing it and checking for continuous on the other poles?

Aww, I don't have access to that forum. Well I've tested relays before, this one will probably not really be any different. Are you thinking this would be why the pump was running with the ignition off?

Sounds plausible.....

It's not a very expensive part to replace anyway....

I'm almost 100% sure it's the relay if the pump runs continuously.

A bad pressure switch will cause the pump motor to run continuously.....

But it will turn off when the ignition switch is turned off.....

Thats a good point I suppose. The accumulator probably still needs to be replaced hehe. Where might I get another relay? Autozone might have them?

Autozone might have it. I got mine at a parts store, so they are probably not too hard to find.

See Duffy Floyd's post in this thread.

Went through all that within the last 9 months on my '90. Get your pressure switch replaced with the accumulator and relay. It's probably ready to go too. DO NOT repeat DO NOT get the SIA accumulator. I got one, not realizing it was for Turbo Coupe not Supercoupe even though they market it that way. It's too small. After about a month wouldn't hold pressure. Lights started coming on again. Drove me nuts. Eventually blew its O-ring. Couldn't get any answers from them on warranty replacement. Had to bite the bullet and pay the money for the Ford part. Problem solved.

Wow, I hadn't heard that. What is the problem? Is the pipe nipple too short?
