ASP underdrive pulleys HELP!

Hey all, I installed the ASP (?) underdrive pulley's yesterday and my belt rubbed! Needless to say I had to uninstall the pulleys. I was told that the original accessory belt size was used with the underdrive pulleys... what are your experiences, did they just send me the wrong pulley sizes?

Thanks,
Paul

I'm running the same pulleis. My stock belt did not rub. It was a close fit, only a piece of paper was able to fit between the top tensioner and the water pump. Is that were yours rubbed??

I'd say to try a new belt. I used the dyco poly cut, not the same as gatos backs, but close.

The part # you need is 5080985 that belt is 1/2 shorter thatn the stock belt, that should do you.

good luck

This is what it looked like before I put on the alternator pulley. You should be able to see that the tensioner is really out of whack. This arrangement caused the tensioner to knock against the alternator. When I put on the oversized alternator pulley that came as part of the set, there was no space what-so-ever and the car wouldn't even turn-over.

I'm planning on calling RPMOutlet tomorrow where I ordered the underdrive pulley's from, but if you think a shorter belt will correct the problem... I just don't want to go and spend the money investing in a bunch of different belts to try and half-assedly get this thing going. That and it is annoying to keep having to drop the lower radiator hose and pull all the bolts off and put all the bolts on etc etc...

Thanks, Paul

Are you sure the car won't turn over because of the belt rubbing?
I notice you have a 94 from your sig. A lot of times the Alt. pulleys from the U/D pulley sets do not work properly unless a spacer is made to get the pulley away from the case on the 94-95 SC's.
My 94 rubbed the U/D alt pulley on the case and wouldn't let the car turn over. My 95 which has an alt from an earlier car required no modification.
If the belt is rubbing you can try loosening the bolt holding the belt tensioner to the bracket while the belt is installed and then re-tighten it. This will usually get you a little clearance. As long as you can fit a piece of paper between them you are golden.

Yeah, I'm certain it was the belt rubbing on itself. Called ASP today and they told me that they were aware that there is sometimes a clearance problem with the underdrive pulley's on the '94 SC ... wish I'd been told that before I purchased them... in anycase, they just said send them back.

Anyone know if the billet pulleys from March have the same problem in the '94?

(Think I'll ask this under the March group-buy thread as well)

Paul

I think the March billet pulleys are a perfect fit. However they will run you around $230.00 as opposed to $160.00 for the ASP's.

Problem is that the ASP were supposed to be a direct fit as well... the fit problem seems to be particular to the '94s... don't know if it is only the 5-speeds that are affected or if the problem occurs in the autos as well.

In my 89 the March set fits fine, except for the alternator pulley, the pulley needed to be shimmed away from the alternator housing by about 0.030".

I have the stock SC pulley and the steel tensioners and have no problems with stock length belts.

On the March set the alternator is run a bit too slow for my taste. My headlights dim when stopped and you can hear the heater blower change RPM also. Otherwise a very good set if you don't wait 6 months for them like I did.

So what's the deal with the u/d pulleys. I have heard so many things that I am scared to touch them. I have read something about having to take off the balancer and taking off some pins also about the alt. pulley not fitting right. I have a 94 sc can someone clue me in.

Just go to a hardware (Ace, Lowes,...) store in the fastener section. They should carry shims that should fit between the pulley and alt. You can use the steel shims or nylon type.

The pulleys from ASP fit on mine just fine, it was a probably with the belt length and the tensioners that is causing me a problem.
It is supposed to use the stock belt, and I have been unable to find a belt that is only an inch or 2 shorter (and I'm not certain that this would in fact correct the problem). Apparently the folks that have gotten these pulley's to work only have a paper thickness worth of clearance? Seems to me that that makes it a fairly risky proposition as well... considering that things tend to bend some under stress...

Paul, like Ryan mentioned in this thread earlier get the Dayco belt, part # 5080895. This is 0.5" shorter than the stock belt and it should correct the problem.
