I did that for the first stage of my exhaust. Got rid of the third cat, factory resonator, and mufflers and just put in a magnaflow muffler. It sounded ok once it broke in but still had a drone around 2,000 rpm. Then I had downtubes made and got rid of the other two cats and it sounded horrible. Drove it around for two days before I bought two Dynomax mufflers and welded them on myself. Sounds incredible and I would have done it this way the first time if I had known and if I had the money. So, in short, if you keep at least two of the cats, it will sound ok. But without cats, prepare to be assaulted by a noise so horrible that you will be praying for the rice burner sound. Brandon

I have dual 2.5" exhaust with magnaflow dual in/out resonator, and dynomax superturbo muflers and no cats. It is a tad bit louder than I would have hoped for, a slight drone at 2k, but it is bearable and sounds great under acceleration.
Personaly I would not run just the resonator without muflers or cats and I agree with the above post. -John |

I have the following setup on my N/A 3.8L splitport tbird:
Ported manifolds 2.25" downtubes 18" Magnaflow resonator Single 3" to dual 2.75" with turndowns at the bumper It can be pretty loud, has some drone below 2000 rpm, but all in all, I like it. ![]() -Rod
