I use Quack-er-Stat dino 5W30 in all my cars, and everything looks clean as new etc. I thought about switching over to Mobil 1 Syn but since I change my oil every 3 months no matter the miles then I don't see the need.
The 3 months change is because otherwise I would only be changing the oil at least twice a year which in a tempeature challenged environment is not a good thing. Frit |

I've used 5-30 Mobil 1 ever since my car was new. I also use a Qt. of Slick 50 every oil change. People will debate the value of Slick 50, BUT it's saved my motor twice with blown HG's. Both times the coolant was sucked dry, the motor over heated & died. No motor damage either time, which I attribute to the slick 50. 68COUGAR |

slick 50
I will agree with you on the slick 50 my truck was treated with it when it had like 60k miles. Now 295k almost 296k miles the motor still runs good as ever considering i have driven the truck like a bat out of hell and the previous owner also. i have had the truck in so many mud holes its not even funny and the motor has held up great, wish i could say the same for the transmission, been through 3 of those the last one i had trans-go shift kit put in it, shift nice and solid now, its really nice when pulling a trailer.

Amsoil 10w30 and Amsoil filter. Change the filter after 6 months and top off. Change oil once a year. This year was only 4500 miles, but I'm up to 7500 miles on the 4.6 in the Cougar. Have also run Amsoil 20w50 in my SB Chevy dirt track car. Ran it from May till Sept (about 15-20 races) with 2 filter changes. The motor had a cracked head and overheated (pegged at 270+) after 10 laps every week. The last race was 30 laps, ran it pegged for the last 16 laps. Never lost oil pressure. When I took it apart during the off season, there was no abnormal wear. No piston scuffing, no bearing wear. I reused the cam and crank with a light polish.
After the experience with the dirt tracker, I'm sold on Amsoil. There's no way dino oil would have taken the heat and beating I put on that motor. That last race was 16 laps of 6500 rpm with the temp at least up to 280. |

Mobil One full synthetic. But, if I could go back, I would use some regular oil (cheaper) and change every 3 MONTHS/3,000 miles. The 3 MONTHS are very important if you drive your car less than 3,000 miles/3 months. I do know that the very best and cheapest thing you can do to properly maintain your SC for years of enjoyment is to change the oil every 3 months/3,000 miles.

Just an FYI, the term parafin in dealing with oil does not mean wax in the normal sense of the word, but a lack of affinity or non reactive. There is a good article concering this in the May issue of National Oil and Lube News Noln article
Now the best oil is... the best filtering filter. Oil will not "wear out" but will become contaminated with whatever junk/liquid that could be floating around in the engine. While no filter can clean your engine of antifreeze if you pop a HG, a great one could add some length to your oil change. Of course this in all my opinion. |

I've always run quaker state and I have yet to find 1 car that had that black crud or sludge in it. As far as slick 50 goes, I've run that in every car I've had except the tbird and the 'rolla, and I've never had any problems with it and in fact have seen noticable better performance and mileage in a couple of them (mind you, all of them where older high mileage cars). I asked about it for the tbird and I was rather promptly told NEVER...... LOL, with articles showing how it can cause fast wear and tear on bearings etc. I would be curious though on how slick 50 reacts to antifreeze hitting it, and if it looses it adhesion properties or not. From your experience, it looks like it may be able to hold long enough to save the bearings from getting chewed when the antifreeze monster gets on the loose. Any guinea pigs to try this out? Frit |

I was reading somewhere and it was saying that not all Synthetic Oil is actually synthetic. I forget the term that was used, but they where saying that some syn oil is nothing more than highly processed regular oil. There was a list of "true" synthetic oil. I was wondering if anyone here knew about this or had any information? I've always used valvaline, but next oil change I'm thinking about switching to Royal Purple.
