Probly Most Frequently asked ?

What is the top speed of a stock 1990 Ford Thunderbird 5-speed?

This has probably been brought up before but truthfully, I do not want to find out the hard way, like some may already have.

I cannot believe Ford only put speedometers in these things to reach 200 kph (120 mph). I heard there are 150 mph speedo kits available somewhere for these cars but I am just curious.

I think most stock Ford cars usually govern out at around 220 kph but I really think I've had my SC over 230 or even 240 kph. Is there even a governor of any kind in these cars? I know it is mad to go these speeds on public roads but the curiosity overcame the safe driving conscience for only a minute or so. I talked to some guy that roled his 89 SC at 120 mph. Couldn't have been pretty, but at least he was still around to talk about it.

Also, I weighed my SC at the local inland grain terminal at 4200 lbs. The highway scale came in at 4120 lbs. What is it exactly?
Thanks,

Brett

Not real sure what the top speeds are, i think that the autos had a governor, but i know the 5 speeds didnt, ive had my XR7 up to some pretty high speeds before, not real sure how fast i was going, but i was hauling some balls i know that. I think that there is a little speed calc. chart some where where u put in ur engine revs, tire size, ect and it will tell you how fast its going......

I only ever hit 100 in mine, and it had a ton of pedal left. I generally don't drive fast on the street, I love stop light to stoplight races, but anything over 90 on public roads is pretty stupid IMO.

Thanks, I am really looking at getting a bigger speedometer sometime. I'm sure it would be nice, and look good too.

I believe that some SC's may be limited to 180mph or so. We have run into what appeared to be a speed limiter on the dyno before.

Now if only an SC could do 180mph, that would be bad a$$

I personally have had my first 35th 5spd to terminaly volocity before once. If I can remember correctly it was just past 4000 rpm and was not going any faster. So yeah, thats like what 150mph

need more power then, or to get the car a little lower/slicker...

I know one SC went 205 at Bonneville, im sure 180 is doable...
