Single side VS. Double side FMIC

What is the differance. Is there a reason everyone use the FMIC with the inlet/outlet on opposite sides. Wouldnt it save in piping and space to use a single sided. Does the performance or effectiveness change.

The intercoolers with opposing endtanks allow for a pretty much straight shot for the path of air. With the single sided intercoolers flow is more indirect. It relies on pressurization more than the other intercooler.

Makes sense, but then again should really be tested in order to see if or how much a difference there is.
