94/95 Magnum Powers Intake Plenums

So we have:

1. Csirny
2. 89FORCEFED95
3. myself
4. rotaryeccentric
5. chickencoupe

Let's keep adding to this list....just cut and paste and add 'yer name in there in your response to this thread, or delete it if you're not still in.

Ill admit im torn on what to do.
I obviously need a late model blower for this to work, which I dont have. Charles has a late model case which addresses that issue which im awaiting pics on. I would also want Ito upgrade injectors and tb and maf. Upside to going this route would be using early model snout I believe would overdrive it a little, downside is I believe early style no coated rotors?

On the other hand flex has the whole shooting match for sale; low mile late model with mp plenum and 42lb injectors with 75mm tb.

I've talked to both and dont know whats up with either. Awaiting different info on both. I probably wouldnt have joined this thread had I saw the late model for sale post first. now im torn. Ive got some money put aside for the car and this is one area id sacrafice spending it vs where the money is ear marked if something transpires with either seller. Otherwise im backing out and will focus on getting the body and other misc stuff right. I know people are busy so im not being pushy but im on the fence and the further we get away from this the more I can see where the money could be spent elsewhere.

This would definetly be an impulse move for me and at this point the impulse is starting to wean.

Revised--I don't want to seem like i'm pushing people, but we need to know who's serious and who's not:

Back when I had a blower, the MP inlet upgrade was the biggest wow for me. Largest seat of the pants gain I had gotten from any bolt on. For clarity, I was running a ported late model blower at 15% OD and the factory inlet, even with a big TB the factory plenum was holding me back. I bought the mp inlet and gained 2psi just from the reduction in inlet restriction. I think I even pulled 5% back off after that. If I were to do another budget m90 build on a supercoupe, the MP inlet would be mandatory. I think I paid 350 bux for it back in 2008 or 9. It was used, and had a hideous port job , and one hole in it that was filled with JB weld, still the best 350 bux I spent with a m90.

Y'all can fill in the ... blanks.

Some good points, Jon. I hear you that $495 is, you know....$495, and if your SC is mostly stock, your gains would be less with the plenum. But consider this, I live in Canada, and our dollar is (give or take on the day) worth about 73-77 percent of the USD, and I still see this as a good deal, because of the HP per dollar. Anyone in the US already has a far better deal than me, and I'm envious. But lord knows that I've already spent more on my exhaust for less of a percentage gain there. :D The other thing is that this deal to make plenums for us may never come around again. The other thing is that, in terms of bolt ons, anything that gives you a 9 percent increase, is a ridiculous bargain. People will spend money on underdrives, throttle bodies, cold air intakes that give far less HP gains. I don't know if you do your own modification work, but speaking personally, I do, and taking off the supercharger and plenum and putting it back on, is about an hour to an hour and a half. So for me, that $495 is a DIY bolt on that makes a heckuva lot of sense.

You are envious about our dollar? LOL. It's worth about 85% what it was in 2008, so you must have loved us then! We haven't mandated car maintenance hear, yet. Does Canada provide that free yet?

AFA the 9% increase in HP - that 40+ HP (or whatever) estimate is based on one Dyno run reported a long time ago on a heavily and professionally modified engine. Numbers and curves like that don't necessarily scale up or down - that's why the big guys do dynos. Others can comment, but in my car the actual power gain from a less restrictive plenum would be rather modest. My mods are listed in my garage. I would anticipate a little more throttle response, and maybe a reduction in the parasitic SC HP from pumping efficiency that would translate into some power, and probably more torque. Trying to be realistic.

If you continue to mod the car down the road, which we all of end up doing for the most part, the plenum is going to continue to provide benefit. You currently have a bigger maf and bigger tb, but on a stock plenum, so those two items are currently decoration basically. Say you don't buy the plenum, but instead down the road you buy some overdrive, heads, cam, etc, you wont be recognizing the full benefit from your investment. Then when you want the plenum, good luck, I haven't seen one for sale in forever.

If you knew for 100% that you'd never get the itch to mod more, yeah there's $495 that you could probably put to work better elsewhere. But I remember saying I was satisfied at 300rwhp.......that was 437rwhp ago:rolleyes:

IF you end up like I did, and sell all your parts for a high hp build. Your MP Plenum will be your one part that depreciated the least, if any at all.

This shouldn't be that hard of a decision to make. It's a performance part and we're men. If I have to choose between car parts or paying the power bill and feeding myself I will eat the neighbors cat and start burning my furniture for heat.

+1000!!!!

Neverfastenough nailed it, too.....if ever our cars are wrecked, all we have to do is pull off the plenum (an hour long job, at most) and then sell it on here. It's a great investment. It's not like an upgraded exhaust, which goes down with the ship, as they'd say. On top of that, I still maintain that--yes, the dyno'd car in question has the requisite major mods in head work, cam, etc, if it's over 400 rwhp--but every mod that we do on these cars are support mods.....exhaust, intake, heads, pulley, intercooler. One could say that an intercooler isn't necessary, either, but I would highly disagree. If one has to think too hard about spending the money (even on something like an intercooler), they're not serious about making power. That's fine. Everybody should be able to enjoy their car whichever way they like, and sometimes the best thing is just to get in it and drive, rather than worry about upgrades and finances.

Best point yet

Do you think I could sell my port matched plenum (75 mm) on here for $65?

Im kinda bummed that these wont be powder coated. When these were first introduced was there an upcharge for powdercoating?

Anyone questioning whether this is a worthwhile mod clearly has not driven a car with one. It is the single most transformative mod I have ever installed on any SC. This inlet, along with larger injectors, TB, MAF, and a tune, was more of an improvement on my car than ported heads and a cam, which were way more expensive. It was more of an improvement over the 94/95 blower with a ported inlet and 70mm TB than that was over the stock early style blower. If I didn't already have one, I would be jumping on this. As far as I'm concerned, there are only 3 reasons for someone with an SC not to buy this part. Either you already have one, you are going with an MPX or non-M90 power adder, or you want to keep the car completely stock. If you don't fall into one of those 3 categories, buy this part!

Just a guess here, but possibly when they were first introduced, was there way more demand for these? One of the basic rules of business is that the more demand for something means that you can make more units, which means that your cost per unit goes down as you manufacture more, and that you can pass that savings onto your customers.

The other frame of mind is that when they were first introduced, perhaps costs were lower. With each passing year, inflationary costs of things go up on a variety of levels. All I know is that finding parts for these cars become a bit more difficult each year, and that, undoubtedly, the vendors and aftermarket specialists for these cars are likely incurring more expenses to make things available to us. If we're struggling to get to five people to buy these plenums, we have to realize that Charles has to go to his casting company with a minimal order, which means that his price per unit is more expensive. Just pointing this out for people that don't realize what is involved, and why, at 5 units, it costs more to make than 10 units. Our cars are a very, very, very specialized niche business, because of their scarcity.....more and moreso with more cars hitting the wrecker every year, vehicles being written off, etc.

Powder is not a big deal. There is at least one member who has OE matched powder who will do it for you.

Not just that costs can be spread out over 10 vs. 5, it's about taking time out from other money making projects with reliable return, etc. In the case w/our cars, I can imagine the halo effect that could help sell other components. But yes, our cars are a niche for any vendor. I've had the pleasure of meeting Charles and touring his shop...he really does care about helping. We're lucky to have vendors that feed our needs - just be sure to not jerk any of them around ;)

I was just curious is all. I wasnt insinuating anything just asking a simple question. Please don't read to far into it. Im super greatful for the opportunity to have these come back around. You can see by my join date that im new to this club and these cars and the aftermarket that supports them.
I just wanted to know if when these were first produced if they came powdercoated at the price they sold for? My reasoning was not because I thought it was cheaper to produce without because im sure there is cost associated with polishing. I just wanted mine to match my blower and ic tubes and didnt know if I should volunteer payment to get it powdercoated if it was something that was offered previously at the set price as I was not a member the last time these were sold. Not trying to jerk anyone around.
I get your excited about this and want them to be made. So do I. That doesnt mean I cant ask questions or inquire about what im going to spend my hard earned money on In an attempt to make a smart informed purchase.

No worries! I had misread your original message as a critique of the value of what's being offered.
