Water Pump Removal: How to get past the Bottom Bracket?

Best case scenario - it's possible that because of leaking, adding, leaking, adding, it may be slightly overfilled. And all it needs is a bit of coolant removed. Worst case scenario is that there's a head gasket leak. But it would likely present as bubbles in the overflow tank while running...

Water Pump Removal: How to get past the Bottom Bracket?

It's been a while since I worked on the 3.8L SC, but you might want to search on here for the process for removing the harmonic balancer. And look it over carefully while you have it off, as the rubber bond between the two sections is a known failure point.

Water Pump Removal: How to get past the Bottom Bracket?

Could be your thermostat housing gasket, or one of the bypass hoses that come off it. Something with the thermostat might help explain the running hot. You might consider renting a cooling system pressure tester from Autozone or equivalent.

    Finally Joined

 It's been a while since I dropped in here. Wile E. Coyote Jr. sent me a PM updating me on what my old car has been up to. Nice work there! I'm glad someone is enjoying it... Especially carrying on the Thunderbird enthusiasm in the younger generation. I hope everyone reading this is well!

Front brakes - New rotors, reman loaded calipers - Never used

Hello all, I have some front brake parts for sale that I never used. New rotors, remanufactured calipers. These calipers are for a 1990 SC (so I think they will fit 89-92, but will not fit 93-97). They are reman by Nastra, sold in a set as part number 7431920. These sell for about $63 each...

1990 Thunderbird SC Auto Parts Car - Rusty - Runs - ABS good - PHL suburbs - $300

Hi Matt, Thanks for the kind words. It is my only SC, at least for now. (Uh-oh, did my wife overhear that?) ;) I am sad to let it go, but "life happened" when our second child came along a couple of years ago, and I just haven't had time to put much effort into keeping the car going. Work...

1990 Thunderbird SC Auto Parts Car - Rusty - Runs - ABS good - PHL suburbs - $300

Edit: The car is sold. Hello SCCoA, I am a long-time board member that hasn't posted here in a while. Sadly, my 1990 Ford Thunderbird SC has rusted to the point that it won't pass PA state inspection. Both rockers panels are perforated (inside and outside). There are some other small rust...

Seatbelts move to proper position, but shoudler belt will never catch/sinch/tighten?

I think the shop manual may have a test involving taking the seats out of the car, tilting them forward, and seeing if the spool locks then. Just a dim recollection.

An update on the saga of my bird's brakes

One could also ask why you paid for a Thunderbird when you could have gotten a Hyundai Excel cheaper. They both work. ;) But seriously - You know your situation best. I am sure you will pick what is best for you. I think there are advantages to each system mentioned here. - Teves has ABS...

An update on the saga of my bird's brakes

The motor brushes don't really go bad with age, as they are made of carbon and are very stable material. Use is what wears them out. Depending on how long the accumulator was bad, it could have resulted in some noticeable wear. It's hard to guess how much it was in reality. If I was betting...

An update on the saga of my bird's brakes

No problem. FYI, if you do end up keeping the Teves system, remember that the accumulator ball can be swapped from the top without disturbing the MC and pump. With a special tool (thin wall 36mm socket), the pressure switch can also be removed while leaving the pump in the car. So those...

An update on the saga of my bird's brakes

The Teves system does give really good, solid pedal feel, which I like. And it's technically interesting (not that it matters too much on a daily driver!). I have had failures of the ABS relay and the pump motor. So I can't say it's trouble free. But I have kept it (doing the work myself)...

An update on the saga of my bird's brakes

Does the ABS pump still build pressure? If so, you may not need to swap the pump. Just replace the seals. If you take a look at the Jaguar pump & motor in this picture (link may go down eventually), the black plastic at the bottom of the motor can is some kind of vent/drain port. If the...

An update on the saga of my bird's brakes

"They" (Ford) don't really sell any of this anymore, but most of it is available here and there, as we have been discussing. The hardest part to source, and the one that most rarely fails, is the master cylinder itself. You may be able to get a reman one from Cardone. From what I understand...

An update on the saga of my bird's brakes

I think that the Buick Reatta switch changed connector design midway through the run. The one KMT linked fits our cars. I think that is 87-88? The later one does not fit (a pigtail is needed to convert it, and the pigtail is not available new). So as long as the proper switch is available...

An update on the saga of my bird's brakes

It's possible for the switch to leak around the housing, but unlikely unless you disturbed it. It more likely leaks internally through the body of the switch due to a ruptured pressure diaphragm. But that wouldn't be a very big leak, I think. Most common leak spots are where the pump motor...

R12 Refrigerant 12oz cans for use in 89 - 93 Thunderbird OEM A/C Systems All Engines

The legality is a good point. FYI, some of us are certified to use these. (The EPA allows the Mobile Air Conditioning Society to certify technicians. I got my certification ... it's not that hard. Just a bit of study and a test.)

    Headers

Some people run Mustang headers on MN12s with some clearancing, like heat & dent or cut, turn, & weld, but I think that only works for shorty headers. I think long tube header fitment would just be too different between the two. But I haven't tried it myself. Long tube headers have been...
