Are there speed and rev limiters in the ECU on a 1994 auto SC? If so can they be either turned off or adjusted thru a Moates Quarterhorse chip/program?

I know there are both on the 89-90's, a rev limiter to stop the torque converter from "balooning"( may only be on auto trans cars?) & a speed limiter to stop drive shaft from blowing up- since it spins faster then engine when in overdrive, so I assume there is on later models as well, but not sure if it can be modified or deleted.

I know on the lx version the old school super chip would turn off the speed limiter (I had one on my 94 4.6 that I don't have anymore) so I'm sure there is a way to do it but not sure about the quarter horses potential being that neither of my current tbirds have a chip/program/tuner

Do the 90 Sc's have a limiter? I've had mine up to 110 (fast as I wanted to go) and it didn't cut out but my 94 would cut out a 100 or so and my 97 does at 105 (I think my speedo is slightly off)

Early SCs and 94/95 5-speeds definitely don’t have a speed limiter. I’m not sure about the 94/95 autos, but if they do have one, that can easily be adjusted or turned off in the tune. All years have a rev limiter, and that can be adjusted in a tune.

How high can you take a stock engine? I was always under the impression that they ran out of breath anything above 5500, & limiter was 6000. I've never tried. The timing chain tensioner is a weak point at high RPM too?

A stock SC motor will be out of breath by 5500rpm, and I believe the stock rev limit is like 5800, so unless you have upgraded heads and cam there is no reason to spin it past that. The motor in my XR7 is basically a stock 94/95 bottom end with ported big valve heads, upgraded valve springs, roller rockers, and a mild cam, and I have the rev limiter on that set to 6200, but usually shift no later than 6000, since power starts dropping off pretty quickly after 5500.

From a 2007 Motortrend write up;
"Unfortunately, placing the emphasis on the impressive low-speed power production meant the supercharged 3.8L was not rev-happy. There was little sense in revving the motor to 5,500 rpm or beyond since the peak power occurred at just 4,000 rpm."
I think turning anything past 5,000 +- 200 rpm, is a waste , and even abusive. With a 5 speed car, It's easy to spin past even 5,500 in 1st, and second by not paying attention to the tach, but it stopped pulling before that. I always wondered about all the spun bearings, with the SC? Over-rev, coolant in the oil, detonation? I'm going with over-rev. :)

Ok, where do I find it on the Moates Quartehorse tune on my laptop?

I’m not sure exactly where it is. I am definitely a complete amateur when it comes to tuning, and most of what experience I do have is with SCT rather than moates, but it will definitely be in there, you just have to poke around until you find it.

I've never tuned it with the Moates, over the years I flew in Dalke to tune it at a local speed shop. Maybe he or Chris Vining can give me some info on how to find/eliminate it.
