Clutch Safety Switch

Hello,

I did a few searches and was hoping someone could chime in as there are often threads asking questions and no one ever responded. I bought a 5.0 bird that had a 5-speed conversion done and the safety switch wasn't installed. Maryland state inspections don't let anything slide so I have to have one installed to pass inspection.

Years ago I converted my 91 5.0 to a 5-speed and had everything from my previous SC to do the swap. I cant recall if I had to rewire anything or if the 5.0 harness had the wiring already there. Could someone let me know what I would need or do to get the safety switch issue corrected. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If anyone has the parts available I will gladly pay for them along with time and shipping. Thanks

There is a bypass plug right where the switch goes. You can still get the switch new on rockauto. You will need the white plastic clip that holds the switch to the pedal bracket (new ones available at tbscshop for 39.95), the metal rod that goes into the switch and a small clip to hold the rod on the pedal. I got those the last time at tractor supply.

Adam,
Is the bypass plug for the wiring of the switch? Do you have the part number for the metal rod? Thanks for the help.

So they use the same under dash harness as the S/C's on 5.0 & 3.8 n/a's as well? I wasn't aware of that. I always thought the S/C's & XR-7's got a different one with provisions for the maintenace monitor, steering angle sensor & clutch switch.

The bypass plug might be taped up to the main harness but if you look up at it it should be noticeable. The bypass plug just unhooked from the harness and then the harness will plug right in the switch. I'm not sure on the part number of the rod, was looking and unfortunately haven't seen any available online. Maybe someone on here has one in their parts bin that you can get.

Doug, not sure about the n/a 3.8s, but my 5.0 has the steering angle sensor, the clutch switch wiring and the maintenance monitor plug, so it might be the same harness but not sure on that.

You're probably right Adam, it would make sense they would only use 1 harness regardless of engine or model. They likely only changed in 94 with the addition of airbags. I know they all have the connectors for the auto dim/delay lights & power antenna on cars not equipped with those options. 1 of mine doesn't have the corning lamps, but the connectors for them are clipped inside the front bumper cover & there is a spot under dash for the relay. Mine are all built for Canada, so they have the daytime running light system which requires a control module behind the left headlight. I've been told the connector for it is still there for sold in U.S. cars.

I've always wondered if mine have all the wiring for the seat belt system that U.S. cars used.
