I have had more than a few Ford products in my lifetime, but have never had to replace a PCM. Lets just call the enging control a "PCM", as the SAE standard automotive industry term. Yesterday, after driving awhile, I stopped, and got out, and opened, then closed the passenger door, with the engine still running. Drove off, then stopped, and the engine died. It was hard to start, and was running rough. Got to a parking lot, and you could smell gas, and was running pig rich. Got under the hood, and didn't see a leak, so I unplugged the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator. Still running bad, and smelling a bit like raw gas, and smoking. I started driving it back home, and if I kept the RPM's above 3,000, it would clean up, and run, on 6 cylinders. Ran OK, at WOT, also. I stopped about a mile from my house, and and it was idling, and running just fine. Ran codes, and got a 15, (Keep Alive Memory) fault. It has always had that one. Driven it over 10K miles, most of it in the last 12 months, running perfectly. I thought about a stuck injector, but they were professionally cleaned, a flowed over a year ago. I have seen older ford FPR stick closed, and run the rail pressure over 90 psi, but they always needed replacement. I'm afraid all my older EEC-lV PCM's, need to come out, and be recapped, at a minimum.
This is happening on my white 89 5spd. SC, that I put the engine in last year. Has this ever happened to anyone here?
