I'm currently working on a 1989 ford thunderbird super coupe, and I need assistance with the front crankshaft seal. I was advised to just remove the seal with a flat head, clean the area and pop the new one in. When removing the seal all that came out was a brown rubber ring and a metal spring band and when searching for a new seal at my local parts store all the ones they had have a big metal piece that that goes around the rubber ring and spring band. even when searching the internet the only ones I see have that metal cover.
I would love to know if i did something wrong when removing the seal. I seen somewhere that you need to remove the timing cover to replace the front seal but the vehicle he was demonstrating the procedure with was not the same. So I didn't think it was valid.
Thank you so much, and god bless!!

I have only seen the one your referencing that has a lip on it. when you put the balancer back make sure and put rtv black on the crank bolt as they leak from there and you will think that its the front crank seal.
