Need odometer removal advice

I need to replace the odometer gears in my '91 SC but having trouble removing the speedo needle. I tried the fork approach but encountered heavy resistance. How is the reset assy removed?

Make sure the fork tings are parallel, (flat), to the needle hub. Pad and shim the back of the fork where it lays on the instrument face, to achieve this. On the GM instruments, I would twist the needle past the stop, to crack them loose, before pulling. A bit risky, though. Do you have a speedometer repair shop in your area? Might be the safest way.

Thanks for the reply, but I'd like to take a less risky approach. Bill Evanoff of SC Performance recommends in his download to "unclip the reset assy". I may give him a call/email if I can't figure this out.

The fork method has worked for me but it takes a surprising amount of force. I'll admit to being afraid I'd break something, but haven't yet.

I never had any luck with removing the needle. It can be done without removing the needle. Unfortunately, it's been so long since I've done it, I can't remember how.

As Mercutio laments, truth is, removing the speedo needle routinely requires an inordinately uncomfortable amount of force. I've done this 1/2 dozen times, mostly with different heads and not once encountered collateral damage. Scary, yes, but remember when working on a SC, never show fear or that car will own you every time you get near it ;)
