Overflow tank bubbling

overflow tank bubbling; Is this always a head gasket failure? Last summer after parking I heard some bubbling, opened my hood and the tank was bubbling pretty good but not shooting out. Last month it started up again, this time at about 20 miles or so of driving it was leaking out bad enough that I had to pull over and the engine bay steamed for about 20 minutes. I just wanted to see if she ran, and after sitting for a couple nights I picked it up and drove it back home. Fired right up, fan came on, no issues at all. No bubbling, no overheating. I replaced the radiator cap, thermostat and ect sensor (ect went out and other parts were old). Temp gauge than shot up to as far on the hot as could go when taking her 2 miles to park her in my storage and start working on it, but again no bubbling, no leaking, filled her up with coolant before the drive after the thermostat change. A new radiator is already on the way since it's original from the factory, and the head gaskets have never been done. I've been wanting to replace the cooling system parts for quite some time, but now financially things have really opened up for me.
She still runs like nothing is wrong with her, so maybe I just got lucky

what mine was doing thats simlar to yours is it would bubble under a load but not always at idle. so get a combusiton gas test you can get that at harbor freight. that will tell you if your getting exhaust gases in your coolant then you'll know if you have a head gasket failure or not. other wise it could be your fan not always coming on when needed or something along those lines.

yep I need to get one of those and confirm the head gasket is good or bad. I hope the new radiator works well, they're $500 on ebay

Temp shooting up to high as far as it could go in less then 2 miles after sensor & thermostat change could have been trapped air in system. Did you bleed/purge during refill?

I got a rad from rockauto several years ago I don't remember how much it was but it was a good bit cheaper than 500

If your coolant is getting dirty with oil or your reservoir getting discolored and you can see exhaust gas coming with the bubbles, then it’s a head gasket problem.
