I already have the supercoupe performance big brake kits, the 13" 2 piston calipers and 11.6" rear with relocation bracket. I want to go 14" front but need something to match up to the rear. Anyone have anything but the stock calipers on the rear?
Can you post a picture of the rear cobra brakes?I'm sure you could make something work but my 13" rotors and cobra rears are literally the best brakes I've ever had on anything lol unless your running anything north of a 20 like I am you will run into wheel fitment issues.
So you had already decided what direction you were going & placed orders for the nessasary parts prior to your post on Friday?I have 20" wheels now. I have ordered some 14" (355mm) discs and 4 piston Brembo calipers for the front and a mustang adapter plate for the rears to allow 350mm rear discs from the mustang. I hope I can get the adapter plate to work.
There are no Brembo calipers that just "fit" these cars. I used ats calipers that had to be modified by machining them. With a 14" rotor the probably wont clear fwiw. I just put cobra rear rotors on mine with a relocation kit sold by David Dalke at super coupes unlimited. I had to use a wheel spacer with my wheels to get the calipers to even clear the face of the wheel. If you look at mine there's only maybe 1.5" of clearance at the rotor and even less from the caliper to the inner barrell of the wheel.I have 20" wheels now. I mean they are just cobra rotors with stick calipers. What are you going to be doing that would require Road race type brakes? Can you post a picture of the rear cobra brakes?
I am trying to get the brake bias closer to stock. Going from single piston front to two piston front moves the bias forward. Going four piston moves it more forward. I do some autocross and brake bias is important you lose or gain stability with the wrong brake bias. I am trying to find an option for the rear brakes to add more rear bias. This would be a bigger piston single piston or even better an increase in piston count for the rear. I ordered the rear bracket in the hopes I can make it work. It is for a mustang, not a thunderbird. I am not sure it will work and ordered it in the hopes that it will or at least I may be able to modify it to get it to work. This is the point of my request. In fact I am not sure the front will be able to work so I ordered some used calipers in case it doesn't. My question is to see if there are any other options that people know of. I have searched and this is my hope to be able to get what I ordered to work.So you had already decided what direction you were going & placed orders for the nessasary parts prior to your post on Friday?
I have those already and it is a bit too forward in brake bias. I am also rebuilding the engine to make more power so I would like better brakes to go along with the increased power. As mentioned below I do some auto crossing and with the additional power I will be making I am hoping to increase the braking as well.I mean they are just cobra rotors with stick calipers. I will be using Xts front calipers and and S and S engineering kit to allow them to mate to the mustang spindles. I upgraded my spindles to 93 and newer spindles to get the cobra caliper to fit so the kit and the Xts calipers should fit the tbird. The S and S engineering kit allows you to knock out the plugs on the XTS calipers and press in their kit to match up to the mustang spindles. There are no Brembo calipers that just "fit" these cars. your not doing auto cross with 20" wheels and tires. If it won't fit it just won't your not going to will it to work because of an idea in your mind. in the picture you posted you have 17x8 cobra rs on your car. My car is probably the most modified supercoupe in the country and I am just trying to help you save time and money not to mention frustration. You say you've ordered brembo brakes but no one makes brembo brakes for our application. A common modification for our cars and 99 04 mustang cobras is adding Cadillac ats brembo calipers but they have to be machined. I was going to try a 14 " rotor and it just wouldn't fit. When I tell you the brakes on my car will absolutely put you through the windshield I mean it. I have looked extensively into upgrading the rear brakes even further but I havnt found anything that would work and still give me an e brake. You can do what you want i was just trying to save you the trouble.I am trying to get the brake bias closer to stock. Going from single piston front to two piston front moves the bias forward. Did you watch the video? The S and S kit changes the mounting points for the calipers, no machining required. I had 17x9 wheels but as I stated I now have 20" wheels. What offset are the wheels you are using?if you notice that guy had wide body fender flairs and had probably cut his stock wheel openings. with a 20x10 rear I have to run a 235 30 20 to clear with the fenders rolled and they still rub at times. I also have qa1 coilover suspension all the way around, Aje front subframe, custom tubular upper rear ctrl arms and mark 8 lower ctrl arms.
