I'm currently working on a 1989 ford thunderbird super coupe, and I need assistance with the front crankshaft seal. I was advised to just remove the seal with a flat head, clean the area and pop the new one in. When removing the seal all that came out was a brown rubber ring and a metal spring band and when searching for a new seal at my local parts store all the ones they had have a big metal piece that that goes around the rubber ring and spring band. even when searching the internet the only ones I see have that metal cover.
I would love to know if i did something wrong when removing the seal. I seen somewhere that you need to remove the timing cover to replace the front seal but the vehicle he was demonstrating the procedure with was not the same. So I didn't think it was valid.
Thank you so much, and god bless!!

What you removed is just a piece of the seal, the big metal seal you're seeing at the parts store still is in the front cover and has yet to be replaced.

Typically in there pretty snug and then pounding the new seal back into the front cover is equally as uncomfortable as a decent amount of force is used to pound it back into the cover.

Or am I missing the question here?

Thank you so much Tim. By any chance would you know what steps I would need to take to remove the metal seal?

Found this video on YouTube, its not a supercoupe engine but it gives the steps that are just the same removal/install as our engine.

Typically removal of the seal requires a flathead screw driver to get between the metal flange of the seal and the timing cover to pop out. Then a large socket or pipe of similar diameter to bang the new one in. Hope the video helps.
